Workington 1 -2 Bamber Bridge
It was a dominant start for Brig and their first big opportunity inside the penalty area fell to Ollie Molloy after a defence splitting pass from Potts found the striker who controlled the ball well, he was then brought to ground by the Workington defender however the offside flag was up.
Just 4 minutes later Brig opened the scoring after Edwards played the ball into Molloy’s feet from the far side of the pitch midway through Workington’s half, Molloy 18 yards out turned and played a brilliant pass into Weaver who found space to shoot in the right side of the penalty box and his shot deflected off Workington goalkeeper Mitchell and rolled into the bottom left corner.
Brig started to dictate the match from this point onwards and just after a quarter of an hour they put together a brilliant move down the far side that started from defence to attack, after intricate passing the ball eventually found its way for Jeff Adubofour to run onto but his attempted cross was blocked.
It wasn’t long until Brig doubled their lead as Baxter’s stunning half volley diagonal ball found its way to Weaver, who cut inside on to his left foot and the ball was turned in by Jeff Adubofour just after twenty minutes.
Brig were outplaying Workington in the opening half an hour, forcing Workington boss to make a very early double substitution, looking for a different outlet at the top of the pitch.
Half time and Brig led 2-0.
As the second half started, Workington managed to limit Brig’s dominance but it was Brig who made the first big chance of the second half after a long ball from Michauski was flicked on by Molloy sending Hasler-Cregg through on goal but he couldn’t get a shot away after a challenge from the Workington defender.
Brig then had another great chance to put the game to bed after Potts delivered a good ball into the box from a free kick, forcing the goalkeeper into a mistake, punching the ball straight into the path of Grand whose shot was just wide of the post.
Workington got a goal back out of nothing after Finlay Wallbank lost possession to Dav Symington who stole the ball and drove forward to slot past Michauski half an hour into the second half.
Brig worked hard from there to secure the victory and limited Workington to barely a sniff of an equaliser and managed to take all 3 points.
Assistant manager John Hills had plenty of praise for winger Lucas Weaver who contributed to the 2-1 win with a goal and an assist, saying “He’s such a threat, he’s got so much talent”.
“We said before the game he would be a match winner for us having done a bit of homework on Workington, I thought we’d get a lot of joy out of Weaves.”
Hills also praised the team for their game management in the closing stages to win the match.
“It was all about game management, I said that at half time, and the lads took that on board I thought they defended absolutely brilliantly so yeah every credit and I thought overall we deserved the three points.”
Next up for Brig is an away trip to Warrington Rylands on Saturday.
