Match Report: Bamber Bridge 5-2 Basford United

Two goals from Danny Edwards helped to secure a 5-2 win for Bamber Bridge over Basford United at Irongate.

After a difficult week off the pitch for Brig, following confirmation that midfielder Harry Benns had suffered a double leg break and ankle damage in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Ashton United, it was back to on-pitch matters at Irongate.

And in a first half that delivered few clear cut chances, Harry Scarborough had Brig’s best opportunity earlier on when his 25-yard effort cleared the bar.

It took until 42 minutes for Jamie Milligan’s side to deliver the opening goal, Scarborough picking up a loose ball before driving forward and slotting the ball beyond Basford goalkeeper Kieran Preston.

It was then 2-0 on 47 minutes, Sam Billington finding the bottom corner with a low right-footed effort after a good team move.

Basford did cut the deficit eight minutes later, Remaye Campbell reacting quickest at the back post after James Pradic had parried Charlie Wakefield’s shot.

But Brig cancelled that strike out on 62 minutes, Edwards scoring his first goal with a superbly placed low effort into the bottom right corner past a sea of defenders.

And the midfielder grabbed his second of the afternoon on 69 minutes, this time squeezing the ball in off the post from 12 yards out.

The goalscoring didn’t end there, though, with Basford giving themselves some hope when Jordan Hallam curled the ball into the corner from 25 yards - leaving Pradic with no chance.

Brig substitute Tunde Bayode then made sure of the three points, smashing the ball into the top corner after it had been cleared as far as the midfielder from a corner.

The score ended 5-2 after a thrilling second half, with the result moving Milligan’s side up four places to 13th in the NPL Premier Division table.

It’s Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy action for Brig at Irongate on Tuesday, with West Didsbury & Chorlton the visitors.
