Brightlingsea Regent match report

match report by Taimour Lay

Only a ninth league win of the season recorded by a tight margin on 8 February might normally suggest a campaign gone awry. Not a bit of it. We’ve only lost five, after all. Which is not to say we couldn’t have won a few more but after a few years of the league table very much not lying, 2019/2020 is definitely a case of the Isthmian Prem not telling the whole truth.

This 2-1 home vanquishing of Brightlingsea Regent was ultimately comfortable, although Romario Dunne’s injury-time goal had the draw-mongers fearing another two points lost.

Dan Bennett had given K’s the lead as early as the 4th minute, curling in a loose ball from a scrap in the box, a touch of class after a scramble of challenges and half-clearances. It was his 12th goal of a fine season – and he’s now only 6 short of a certain Louie Theophanous.

Six minutes after the break came the moment for which this match may come to be remembered: Eddie Dsane’s first goal for K’s. After umpteen chances, goalkeeping heroics, clearances off the line, gusts of wind and bobbles and cruel divine interventions, stretching over half-a-dozen games, he found himself at a tight angle, the ball duly departed his right boot and burst the net to register a score. His relief was visible as he bundled with the car park end faithful, and even his team-mates joined in the chant of “Eddie! Eddie!” The first of many, no doubt.

Otherwise, this was the kind of routine home win that has somehow eluded us in recent months and which will need to come the norm if next season is to bring a real promotion push.
