If you had turned up at half-time not knowing the context of this fixture, it would have been easy to think it was, quite simply, Jay Gasson’s testimonial match.
The K’s fans, in fine voice, remixed all the classics to pay homage to the erstwhile centre-back. Even the Southgate Atomic Kitten tune that serenaded the summer worked in this instance, belted out as Gasson sent another attacker tumbling to the floor, or lobbed the ball into space behind the Camberley full-backs.
As all testimonials dictate, the man of the moment was even permitted to score a goal, his very first for K’s after two months of dedicated service. His defensive partner Sean Francis was the architect, picking out ‘The Gas Man’ in space who poked past the keeper for goal number four of the night.

In truth, though, this was a terribly easy preliminary Surrey Senior Cup tie that was over by the half-hour. Connor Dymond, booked inside 60 seconds for a tackle that showed K’s were ‘well up for it’, opened the scoring with a well-directed drive from the edge of the box. Muhammadu Faal, on his return to competitive action, instantly made it 2-0 after reaching a through ball before the keeper, poking it past him then rolling into the empty net.
The Gas Man then had a goal disallowed for offside but he wouldn’t have to wait long to make his mark on proceedings. Before half-time our hosts hit the inside of the post from an overhit cross and were then denied by a superb Francis block. It was as close as ‘Caerley’, as the sign on their main stand read, got all night.
K’s, fielding a strong side in this leafy corner of Surrey, kept their foot on the accelerator in the hunt for more goals. James Daly, once again watched in the stands by Mark Bright, calmly slotted home after good work from Mano Gogonas down the right.
That was on 51 minutes and within 120 seconds Gasson had lit the touchpaper. The scoring was completed by sub Reece Williams-Bowers, another first-time scorer, who passed Shaun Lucien’s cross back from whence it came, wrongfooting the beleaguered home keeper.
So five goals, five different scorers, a first away win of the season and a trip to Knaphill next. Oh, and a team of Jay Gassons. In our dreams, anyway.
