Haringey Ease Past Off-Colour K's

Match report by Rupert Cane.

Kingstonian’s excellent recent form was brought to a shuddering halt by Haringey Borough, themselves on a run of five straight league wins since AFC Wimbledon edged them out of the FA Cup.

It was actually the K’s who had the better of the opening quarter-of-an-hour, and things might have been very different had Elliot Buchanan converted an early one-on-one chance. Instead, he put it too close to visiting stopper Valery Pajetet, and the afternoon went downhill from there.

On 18 minutes, Joel Nouble, a top Bostik marksman, converted what Leigh Dynan pointed out was Haringey’s only first-half chance. The manager added that profligacy in front of goal before the break was what cost his team dear; until the second period this looked like a customarily evenly-matched encounter between two sides expected to challenge at the top of the table.

A one-goal deficit seemed surmountable, but Haringey struck a killer second just three minutes after the interval through Karl Akinwande, who was first to a rebound inside the six-yard box.

At this point the K’s players badly lost their way, the ample stuffing provided by recent wins well and truly knocked out of them. Coby Rowe headed in a third shortly before the hour as heads dropped and passes went astray.

There was barely an incident of note in Kingstonian’s attacking third during a dismal second-half display that had Dynan worried afterwards. He will hope this was only a one-off.

An emphatic away win turned into a mauling with 11 minutes left, Chinedu McKenzie capitalising on some more hesitant play from a new-look defence that included star signing Dean Inman. He and his team-mates will have many better days than this ahead, you suspect.
