K’s Get A "W" At Last
After the noise and fury of Friday Night Football, this was a decidedly sedate affair on a Bank Holiday Monday. The subdued atmosphere in the first-half may have been the result of the soporific football, the shock effects of a desperate start to the season or it being a curious “home” game against the quiet landlords.
Either way, the K’s wingers again struggled to make progress as hardworking Casuals – without a win all season – sought to slowly work their way into the game. Eventless minutes ticked by in suburban silence. A swarm of wasps attacked the terrace behind the goal. A dog called Freddie ate my M&S sandwich. Josh Webb furrowed his brow in concentration. Someone shouted “Get Mo Faal on!”
In truth, there was little to separate the two struggling sides until midway through the second-half when Casuals’ inexperienced goalkeeper Bradley Comins unwisely chose to attempt a Cruyff turn in his own box instead of pumping the ball clear. Elliott Buchanan showed strength to rob him of the ball and then finish well from a tight angle into the unguarded net. If this K’s side has anything, it is two strikers of quality.
Casuals can count themselves unlucky not to have obtained at least a point. Warren Mfula forced a fine save from Rob Tolfrey in the first-half, Reece Hannigan hit the bar with a header late on and Aaron Lamont cleared another effort off the line. But they look, like us, to be in for a long season.
