Williams-Bowers brace knocks K’s out of Surrey Cup.
The distance from Kingston is one reason why Ks will be glad to no longer call Fetcham Grove home, despite Leatherhead’s accommodating nature as hosts, and now increasingly poor form is rapidly becoming another.
Ks might have stormed to four away wins on the bounce in the league but by the banks of the River Mole they now have just one win in ten, following a comfortable defeat to the landlords in the Surrey Senior Cup.
Whether down to the heavy pitch – which in fairness played far better than it has in recent weeks after a day of pleasant winter sun – random chance or some other factor, Leigh Dynan’s side simply can’t seem to find the fluidity at Fetcham Grove that they do elsewhere.
The pattern was again frustratingly familiar – the opening period was evenly matched if largely uneventful, but the calm was punctuated by the opposition scoring first, in this case Reece Williams-Bowers smashing powerfully into Rob Tolfrey’s top corner.
Tolfrey kept Ks in the game with a fine double-save from Niall McManus, before Ks eventually threatened at the other end. Tom Beere whipped a free kick into the box and Mark Phillips directed it goalbound with a fine glancing header, only for goalkeeper Manny Agboola to leap impressively to tip it round the post.
Midway through the second half Reece Williams-Bowers added a second from the penalty to ease Leatherhead to victory. Ks generally created little - the returning Daniel Ajakaiye eventually found some space but fired over and when he had the ball in the net ten minutes later it was from an offside position. The Surrey Cup might have been a chance to salvage something from what has been a tough season but Ks will now be firmly into building for the future mode – and will hopefully start finding some form at Fetcham Grove.
