Whitely Hat-Trick Destroys K’s at QEII Stadium

It started so brightly, with Ks spending the first fifteen minutes menacing Enfield Town and looking every inch as if they would come back from the Queen Elizabeth Stadium and its fine art deco café with at least a point. By the 46th minute they were 4-0 down, the rest of the game rendered an irrelevance with an array of Steve Butterworth songs the only way to lift the fans’ spirit as Ks slipped back out of the playoffs and spectacularly wasted one of their games in hand.

Ks’ best chance came in just the fourth minute when Andre McCollin latched onto a weak Enfield header and had a free sight of goal. But goalkeeper Nathan McDonald raced off his line to save with his legs.

Ks kept menacing as Bruce Hogg tested McDonald with a free kick and from the resulting corner Alan Inns had a header saved.

And then on 17 minutes, quite out of the blue, Corey Whitely lashed past Tolfrey from distance to put the hosts one up.

At that point though, it didn’t seem terminal. Hogg fired another free kick narrowly over and then McCollin drew a sharp save with a powerful effort from a tight angle.

But Enfield weathered the storm and began to dominate themselves. Tyler Campbell fired over, Tolfrey made another good save from Bobby Devyne and then on 38 minutes Whitely broke free in the right of the Ks box and powered home for 2-0.

Devyne made it three just before the break and if that didn’t kill the contest, Whitely did just after half time as he completed an impressive hat-trick.
