K’s cop all three points at Imber Court
Kingstonian moved back to the top of the league with a comfortable 2-0 victory courtesy of first half goals from Charlie Knight and the prolific Andre McCollin.
With Matt Drage suspended Dan Sweeney lined up alongside Chris Page at the heart of the defence, with newly arrived Basinstoke loanee Nathan Campbell starting in the centre of midfield. The work ethic of Charles Ofusu-Hene was again preferred on the right over the quality of Matt Pattison, to help cover the wide open spaces of Imber Court.
It only took five minutes for Kingstonian to take the lead as former K’s stalwart Gary MacDonald struggled to cope with the pace and power of Moss, conceding a free kick 40 yards out on the left. Charlie Knight stepped up and curled a teasing ball into the area, which ultimately avoided everyone before finding the corner of the net.
Barring an early scare when an Aaron Goode back header came up and short and Collins shot was smartly smothered by an alert Tolfrey, it was all Kingstonian. A succession of chances came and went; Page had a shot blocked on the line, Knight clipped the post from the edge of the area and an Ofusu-Henes chip was palmed aside by Searle. Just as it looked like the sides would go in 1-0 at half time, a perfect delivery from Knight from a corner was buried by McCollin with an emphatic header. There was just time for Kavanagh to almost extend the lead further wide with a rasping 35 yard effort.
The second half continued in much the same vein as the first as a number of chances went begging for Kingstonian. The otherwise excellent Ryan Moss failed to find the target a number of times, partly through good goalkeeping by Searle, but on another day he would have been expected to bag at least a couple.
It wasn’t until the dying moments of the game that Met Police finally roused themselves, but Tolfrey pulled off two outstanding saves to keep a clean sheet.
This was a pretty consummate performance by Kingstonian. Dan Sweeney showed his class with an impressive performance in defence, alongside the outstanding Chris Page, who didn’t put a foot wrong all night. Nathan Campbell acquitted himself well alongside the hard working Kavangh, who must have covered more ground than anyone else on the pitch. The icing on the cake was the impressive showing of Knight down the left, who was a constant menace to the Met defence already reeling from coping with the dual threat from McCollin and Moss.
