Match Report - Gainsborough Trinity

A slow start from Brig saw several errors punished early on as Gainsborough opened the scoring when Declan Howe headed home following a corner played to the back post just over seven minutes in.

It took strong challenges from Simon Grand and Macauley Wilson, alongside a smart save from James Pradic, to deny the visitors a second 25 minutes in as they looked to build on the opener.

The pendulum then seemingly began to swing in the other direction just after the half hour mark as Jack Baxter fired Brig level. Danny Forbes played the ball wide before Baxters ambitious effort took a deflection and looped over the head of Dylan Wharton in the visitors goal.

Multiple dangerous balls in from Callum Leigh forced a good save from Wharton and a clearance from Hamish Douglas just minutes after the leveller.

Brig saw plenty of possession and created an abundance of openings as the half-time whistle approached, but were unable to take the lead before the interval. As Chris Churchman set Amadou Doumbouya just inside the box, before he fired over the bar

Minutes into their second half Scarborough rose highest heading on and setting Cullen away just inside the box. But he dragged his strike just wide to the left of Wharton’s goal.

The visitors regained the lead on the hour mark when right-back George Hornshaw found himself in space just outside the box. Before firing across goal into Pradic bottom right corner. Trinity taking advantage of their limited possession so far in the second 45.

Chris Marlow completed his return to the club with just over 25 left to play as Brig made a double substitution, with Forbes and Cullen departing for Billy Bould and ‘the goose’.

Simon Grand came close to the leveller when Wharton kept out his headed effort following a corner whipped in by Callum Leigh. Moments before a teasing ball into the middle by Churchman went untouched and out for a throw in.

Brig saw another couple of chances go by, as substitute Jeff Adubofour forced another good save from Wharton before another Churchman cross into a dangerous area went past everyone in the middle. With over five minutes left to play.

Gainsborough’s sealed the victory when Lewis Butroid headed home at the back post in the first minute of added time.
